The short answer
Douyin serves mainland China's short-video market, while TikTok serves international markets. They have separate accounts, audience contexts, advertising products, trends and commerce environments. A TikTok campaign cannot simply target mainland Douyin users.
What can carry across
Brand assets, product demonstrations, production techniques and lessons about strong openings can be useful. The underlying business facts should remain consistent. Footage may be adapted when rights allow.
What needs local work
- Chinese audience and category research
- Platform-specific account and advertising route
- Local scripts, on-screen text and references
- Current formats, creators and production cadence
- Destination page or lead-collection flow
- Customer service and sales handover
Direct translation often misses pacing, context and the questions a Chinese viewer needs answered.
Decide whether the operating model is realistic
Douyin rewards an active creative system. Before launch, confirm who supplies footage, how quickly scripts can be approved, whether the offer can be demonstrated and how a viewer can buy or enquire. A one-off video without distribution or follow-up is not a complete strategy.
Measure creative signals and commercial movement separately. Watch time and completion explain content performance; enquiry quality and sales feedback explain business fit.
